If you are looking for a High Atlas hike, the Draa-Tafilalet region is a wonderful playground for hiking and trekking enthusiasts, containing endless mountain ranges. Here are some suggestions for amazing hikes that include high mountains, high altitude lakes, palm groves, and incredible wildlife.

Hiking trails and paths that suit all tastes and abilities, The Draa Tafilalet region is the hikers’ paradise. All hikers will find what fits their preferences, including walks through Amazigh villages, valleys, and oases for beginner hikers to the conquest of Jbel Saghro for the most athletic, via treks in the dunes of Merzouga and Erg Chgaga.

Hiking is the best way to experience the Draa-Tafilalet region, full of various landscapes. During your trip, you will have the chance to walk for many hours in the middle of magnificent nature, in the mountains, in the desert, or in green valleys, in small groups and accompanied by a guide who knows the treks very well.

Valley of Roses and Dades Gorges

The Valley of Roses is located in the heart of the High Atlas between the majestic M’Goun mountain and the magnificent Dades gorges. It offers the most colorful adornments: green, red, ocher… An easy hike through terraced gardens, oleander woods, fig trees, and magnificent gorges.

Imilchil: from Lake Tislit to Lake Isli

Famous for its Engagement Moussem, which takes place between August and October, you will begin your hike in the village of Imilchil. Then, you will continue your adventure between two lovely lakes, Tislit and Isli. It is a beautiful hiking course at an altitude of 2200m in the heart of the Eastern High Atlas, during which your guide will tell you the tale of the young Amazigh man and woman who fell in love, but their tribes refused to accept it. Jbel Saghro

After a delicious meal, you will head towards the Saghro valley quite early in the morning. The hamada surrounds you, a rocky plain that is relatively rough in the summer but stunning in beauty and colour. You will come across nomads from the Ait Atta tribes that move to escape the hardships of winter in the High Atlas seeking the best grasslands for their goat herds. The hiking is also possible in an area containing rock sculptures, marble quarries, and fossil extraction sites. With its large spaces and bright light, it is a highly appealing face of Morocco that has retained all of its purity!

The Dunes of Erg Chebbi And Erg Chgaga

Across the Sahara Desert, hiking consists of walking for hours in the Sahara’s dunes is doable. Lost in the vast dunes, you will be accompanied by camels that will carry your luggage as you walk across rocky plateaus. You will learn about caravan life and spend the night in tents in the middle of the dunes. Their blond-orange forms and colors will take your breath away, especially at sunset and sunrise. A unique experience indeed!

  • Determine the lodges and inns that are close to the hike you intend to take.
  • Contact them to get the directions.
  • Learn about the hike’s difficulty level, the duration of the trip, and the weather prediction.
  • Book in advance for your stay. The lodges and guides’ offices can assist you to find a local guide to accompany you on your trip.
  • Don’t forget to pack energy bars, dried fruits, almonds, sunscreen, a first aid kit, good shoes, toilet paper, and liquids to keep you hydrated while traveling!
